IBM Halts X Advertising Following Pro-Nazi Content Placement

IBM is retracting its advertising from X after discovering that its ads appeared next to pro-Nazi content on the platform. The company swiftly suspended all ads on X after Media Matters, a nonprofit watchdog group, reported instances of IBM ads alongside pro-Nazi memes and content endorsing Hitler.

In an official statement, IBM declared, "We have zero tolerance for hate speech and discrimination and have immediately suspended all advertising on X while we investigate this entirely unacceptable situation." Comcast, another company whose ads featured in Media Matters' report, informed the Financial Times that it is investigating the situation.

According to an X executive speaking to Engadget, posts identified by Media Matters will be designated as "no longer monetizable" and will carry "sensitive media" labels. Users will have to click through a warning to view the content. The executive acknowledged that while it's not an ideal placement for any ad, the flagged post had only garnered "about 8,000 impressions."

The full impact on IBM's advertising campaigns remains uncertain, but the decision to suspend ads deals another blow to X's already beleaguered advertising business.

X CEO addresses discrimination concernsJohn Davis

In a post on X, CEO Linda Yaccarino commented on the need to eradicate discrimination universally. While not explicitly referring to IBM or Media Matters' report, Yaccarino emphasized X's commitment to combating antisemitism and discrimination. She stated, "There's no place for it anywhere in the world — it's ugly and wrong."
