In a bid to combat the spread of misinformation on its platform, Threads, the popular social media app, is set to introduce a fact-checking program early next year. Head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, recently announced the initiative, revealing that Threads would leverage fact-check ratings from Facebook and Instagram to tackle false information circulating on the app.
The fact-checking program aims to empower third-party fact-checking partners who will play a crucial role in flagging and reviewing content on Threads. Currently, fact-checkers cannot rate content directly on Threads; however, when misinformation is flagged on Instagram or Facebook, the associated fact-checker ratings will extend to Threads.
"Our goal is for fact-checking partners to have the ability to review and rate misinformation on the app," stated Mosseri in his announcement. Users on Threads will be given the option to adjust their settings, allowing them to increase, decrease, or maintain the default level of "demotions on fact-checked content" in their personal feeds.
The move comes at a critical time, with social media platforms facing increasing pressure to curb the spread of misinformation, particularly in the lead-up to significant events such as presidential elections. By implementing a fact-checking system, Threads aims to reinforce its commitment to providing a safer and more reliable online environment for its users.
While the fact-checking feature is a step towards enhancing content integrity on Threads, Mosseri clarified that the platform does not intend to become a primary source for news amplification. The company's focus remains on maintaining a space for social interactions, and the fact-checking program aligns with broader efforts to enhance content moderation.
This development follows Threads' previous initiatives, such as the introduction of a search tool that blocked specific words associated with misinformation on Meta's platform. As the digital landscape evolves, social media companies continue to adapt their strategies to foster a more responsible and trustworthy online community. The upcoming fact-checking program on Threads is a testament to the industry's commitment to mitigating the impact of false information and promoting a safer online experience.
